Brenda Plakans, executive director at Welty Environmental Center will talk to us about the evolving Oak Savannah & Prairie restoration project at Big Hill Park in Beloit that Welty is collaborating with the Rock County Conservationists on. Come and learn about the ecological importance of Oak Savannahs and Prairies in the Midwest, the kinds of plants that grow there, and the native creatures who depend on them. She'll give us a look back at what the land looked like before the City of Beloit purchased it and how the city, county, non-profits and volunteers have worked over the years to restore and preserve what they can of its historically natural state.
As usual, we'll have lots of seeds (food, flower and herb) for you to take home whether you're starting them indoors now or waiting for the right time to plant directly in the garden. We can always use help getting them all packaged, so this will be a hands-on workshop for those willing to assist (though all are welcome). Additionally, there are some limited quantity seeds we reserve for these programs, and you can still take home a seed starting kit if you haven't gotten one yet this year.
