DESCRIPTION:The Diversity Action Team of Rock County is presenting a famil
y focused, hands-on event on Ableism. It will emphasize seeing people wi
th disabilities as individuals first—not defined by their disabilities.
Societal perceptions often limit their ability to reach their full potenti
al. Come, learn ways to interact positively with those who have different
abilities. The program will be moderated by Dale Griffa, President, Diver
sity Action Team of Rock County. Dale has 24 years of experience as a Dive
rsity Practitioner and Consultant primarily working with nonprofits, educa
tional institutions, and religious organizations.Denise Horn, Janesville r
esident and author, will discuss her book Take Your Wings and Fly. Denise,
who has cerebral palsy, will give examples of what she has experienced to
have a “normal life” with a severe disability.Ableism refers to discr
imination or prejudice against people experiencing disabilities. It’s pr
e-conceived notions of what a person can/can’t do. Examples of ableism i
nclude environmental inaccessibility like buildings without ramps or eleva
tors, social prejudice such as using derogatory language or assuming a per
son with a disability is not capable, and systemic discrimination like emp
loyers refusing to make reasonable accommodations or inaccessible websites
. Examples involve making assumptions about a person's disability, tr
eating them in a way which denies their maturity in age or experience, or
using microaggressions like, “You don't look disabled”.
